The word "espresso" is just a fun was to tie into the "expressive" arts. The Cafe concept came from the Inkerman Cafes created by Florence Nightingale, the "Mother of Nursing" to address the boredom and loneliness of the wounded soldiers during the Crimean War. Inkerman Cafes were recreation huts created on the hospital grounds that focused on holistic care through social connections and offered art, games, music, pet care, books, writing, theater and even needle work! She is also set the stage for the beginnings of therapeutic recreation by using a holistic, person-centered approach and recreation to emphasize that healing must addressing mind, body, and spirit.
An "experience" is a multi-layered “encounter,” or period of time a person “lives through“ by encompassing both direct personal experiences and the experiences of others, resulting in knowledge, skill development, and emotional learning.
In 2023, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the US Surgeon General, declared loneliness and social isolation a serious public health epidemic, noting that nearly 50% of US adults experience loneliness and are risk for depression, heart disease, substance abuse, and cognitive decline.
Loneliness is a profound emotional subjective state of a lack of meaningful and satisfying relationships and lack feelings of “mattering,” or believing one is significant and valued by others.
Social isolation on the other hand is an objective state of having few meaningful social connections and infrequent interactions with people.
By understanding of the importance of self-determination, or the choice to make decisions and control one’s own life, you can become motivated to making a deliberate shift from passive, helpless feelings, to a mind-set of action and be inspired to actively engage with others.
We provide emotional support in a safe therapeutic structured environment to improve social connections through individual and group experiences. We use fun and engaging expressive art interventions to enhance cognitive restructuring and skill development to build meaningful interactions.
With opportunities to take small challenges, build self-efficacy skills and boost confidence by identifying your strengths and set small manageable goals.
We bring people together to interact and build meaningful relationships, fostering a sense of belonging and support.
Typically between 1.5 to 2 hours.
You will never be asked to do anything that would make you feel too uncomfortable. Feeling vulnerable and risks can be scary, but the outcome can be life changing.
Expressing feelings with words can be difficult. That is why we use the expressive arts to discover hidden thoughts that can sabotage our desire to make positive changes.

George Orwell

Movement releases endorphins, dopamine, and oxytocin and helps regulate the body’s stress responses. Physical activity can improve mood, reduce stress and release tension and deepen self-awareness.

Practicing mindfulness helps to learn how to be fully present in the moment without judgement. By improving focus, stress can be reduced, more able to manage emotions, and reduce anxiety. The photo to the left is an example of Zentangling, an 8 step mindfulness practice to enhance relaxation without needing any artistic experience!.
Accepting yourself without judgement begins the journey to happiness and well-being
