In 2023, Dr. Vivek Murthy, the US Surgeon General, declared loneliness and social isolation a serious public health epidemic, noting that nearly 50% of US adults experience loneliness or social isolation and are at risk for depression, heart disease, substance abuse, and cognitive decline.
Unfortunately, adults are not the only ones experiencing a social disconnect. Research shows since the pandemic, children and adolescent’s also experience health risks due to these same issues and impacts overall development. Studies show the time people spend alone is increasing, while time spent on in-person social engagement is decreasing.
Loneliness is a profound emotional subjective state of a lack of meaningful and satisfying relationships and lack feelings of “mattering,” or believing one is significant and valued by others. Social isolation on the other hand is an objective state of having few meaningful social connections and infrequent interactions with people.

Symptoms vary depending on your situation and who you are. You may be experiencing chronic loneliness if you consistently you feel some or all any of the following:
*Increased social withdrawal from family and friends
*Inability to connect with others on a deep level
*No close friend who really "gets" you
*Persistent feelings of sadness or emptiness
*Feeling a sense of disconnect from the world around you
*Increased anxiety
*Feelings of worthlessness
*Feeling unheard or your don't matter
*Reliance on technology for social interaction
